An Automotive Electrician tests, diagnoses, services, replaces, repairs and maintains automotive electrical wiring, electrical and electronic systems and their components. This qualification addresses previous shortcomings, offering three part – qualifications covering specific competencies: Automotive Battery Fitter and Tester, Original / Aftermarket Auto – electrical System Component Fitter and Bench Worker. Completing all part – qualifications and remaining modules qualifies for a trade test, leading to the Automotive Electrician qualification.

  • Electrical, auto – electrical, and electronics in automotive vehicles, including aftermarket systems.
  • Conventional charging and starting systems, basic electronic ignition systems, and integrated engine management.
  • Networking, data transfer, and supplemental restraint systems.
  • Alternative drives, HVAC / climate control, convenience / security / telematics systems.
  • Vehicle stability, traction, drive control, transmission, braking, and advanced driver assistance systems.

Practical skills

  • Work safely and respond to emergencies.
  • Use tools and equipment.
  • Build and conduct fault – finding on auto – electrical circuits.
  • Test, diagnose, replace, and service automotive batteries and related components.
  • Service and maintain vehicles in an auto – electrical environment.
  • Remove and replace original and aftermarket auto – electrical systems components.
  • Test, diagnose, and repair conventional starting / charging systems, basic electronic ignition systems, auto – electrical systems, integrated engine management systems, networking / data transfer systems, SRS, HVAC / climate control systems, convenience / security / telematics systems, and VSTDC, ABS braking, transmission, and driver assistance systems.
